This Is Why We Play

This is why USA Deaf Baseball exists.

Last weekend, our USA Deaf Baseball players had the opportunity to join the Iowa Baseball Camp for the Deaf, and the experience was bigger than baseball.

These young athletes were not simply learning how to hit, throw, field, and run the bases. They were spending time with adult Deaf role models who share their language, their experiences, and their love for the game.

You could see how much it meant to them.

They watched our players. They asked questions. They laughed together, signed together, competed together, and built relationships. For some of these campers, it may have been the first time they could look across a baseball field and see an adult Deaf athlete representing what their own future could become.

That is powerful.

IBCD director Dylan Heuer has spent 11 years building this program. The camp began with only 11 campers. This year, more than 40 young athletes participated. That growth speaks to both Dylan’s leadership and the enormous need for opportunities like this within the Deaf community.

Now imagine what could happen if we helped create experiences like this across the country.

USA Deaf Baseball wants to continue showing up for Deaf children nationally. We want our players to serve as mentors, coaches, leaders, and examples of what is possible. But expanding this work requires funding, partnerships, sponsors, and people who believe in the mission.

These kids are the heart and soul of why we play.

We represent the United States in competition, but our purpose reaches far beyond winning games. We play so the next generation can see us, believe in themselves, and someday aspire to wear USA across their own chest.

Please share this post, support our program, or help connect us with organizations and businesses that believe in youth development, accessibility, Deaf leadership, and the power of sports.

This cannot end in Iowa. It should be happening everywhere.
